Summer Car Care FAQs

These are some of the top questions we get about summer car care!

1. What are the most important pre-road trip checks every driver should do?

Before heading out on a summer road trip, we recommend checking tire pressure and tread, testing the battery, inspecting the brakes, and ensuring all lights (including brake and turn signals) are working. It’s also important to check fluid levels and inspect belts and hoses for wear or cracks—heat can make small issues worse quickly. Don’t forget to inspect your spare tire and make sure you have the jack and tools needed to install it in case of an emergency.

2. How often should tires be rotated or replaced before a long trip?

Tires should typically be rotated every 5,000 to 7,500 miles to ensure even wear. If you're planning a long trip and it's been a while since your last rotation, it's smart to do it beforehand. As for replacements, if your tire tread is below 2/32 of an inch or you notice uneven wear, cracking, or bulges, it’s time to replace them before you hit the road.

3. What fluids should be topped off or replaced before hitting the road?

Coolant, engine oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, and windshield washer fluid should all be checked before a trip. Summer heat puts extra stress on your cooling and steering systems, so make sure your coolant and power steering fluid are at proper levels and in good condition. If you're due for an oil change, take care of it before you travel.

4. How can drivers tell if their brakes are in good condition?

Listen for squealing, grinding, or any unusual noises when braking. If your car pulls to one side, the brake pedal feels soft, or you notice longer stopping distances, it’s time for a brake inspection. We also recommend a visual check for brake pad thickness—anything under 3 to 4 mm typically means it's time to replace them. If you're unsure about the condition of your brakes, it's always best to have them inspected by a qualified mechanic.

5. What summer-specific maintenance do you recommend?

Have your air conditioning system inspected—especially if it's not blowing as cold as it used to. Check your battery, as high temperatures can shorten battery life. It's also a good time to inspect wiper blades, which can crack in the heat, and make sure your cooling system is functioning properly to prevent overheating.

6. What emergency items should every car have on board, especially during the summer months?

We recommend keeping a well-stocked emergency kit that includes:

  • Jumper cables

  • Flashlight with extra batteries

  • First aid kit

  • Bottled water and non-perishable snacks

  • Tire pressure gauge and inflator

  • Basic tools

  • Phone charger or power bank

  • Reflective triangles or flares

  • A portable fan or sunshade for extra heat protection

  • Sunscreen and a hat.

7. Any common car issues you see in the summer months?

Yes—overheating engines, A/C system failures, battery problems, and tire blowouts are all more common in summer. Heat can exacerbate existing wear and tear, especially if regular maintenance has been neglected.

8. What’s your best tip for avoiding a roadside breakdown?

Preventive maintenance is key. Have your car inspected by a trusted mechanic before a long trip. Address small issues early—what seems minor in town could become a major inconvenience on the road. And don’t ignore warning lights or strange sounds—they’re your car’s way of asking for help.  A pre-trip inspection can provide valuable peace of mind and help you avoid unexpected problems on your journey.
